A Cabinet of Curiosities

cabinet0fcuriositiesIn its closed form, with a private world of objects and treasures hidden within, we have been thinking of the bureau as a traditional Wunderkammer, or Cabinet of Curiosities. Particularly popular in Renaissance Europe, these ranged in scale from whole rooms to pieces of furniture, and were typically filled with objects of natural history, geology, archeology, or religious relics. They have been described as being “a microcosm or theatre of the world” and “a memory theatre”. We particularly like the idea of the bureau being a memory theatre – a collection of precious objects and artefacts assembled over the course of your life.
